“I’ve been a physiotherapist for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve worked with the England women’s rugby team, Manchester City women’s team, Blackburn Rovers and the McLaren Formula-1 team, and now I want to use those years of sports therapy experience to help you. I believe in a personalised, individualised approach to physiotherapy, whether you’re looking to manage painful symptoms, recover after an injury or simply get stronger and improve your performance.”
Neck pain can come on suddenly after an injury, or build up gradually from everyday strain. The neck is a complicated structure, made up of vertebrae, discs, nerves, muscles, and ligaments, all working together to support your head and allow movement. But with so many moving parts, it’s also a sensitive area that can easily become painful when something goes wrong.
Individuals experience neck pain for a wide variety of reasons, whether it’s connected to an injury, repetitive strain, everyday wear, or an underlying health condition. Below are some of the most frequent reasons I see people suffering from neck issues:
Poor posture – Sitting at a desk, looking down at your phone, or slouching on the couch all put excessive strain on the neck muscles. Poor posture is a widespread problem, often leading to discomfort and in extreme cases, painful symptoms.
Trauma – Sudden movements or accidents (like a car crash) can cause the neck to move quickly and unnaturally. This unexpected jerking movement can lead to whiplash, muscle strain, joint irritation or even disc injuries.
Muscle tension and stress – Emotional stress often causes people to tense their shoulders and neck without even realising it, leading to pain and fatigue in the area.
Degenerative changes – As we age, natural wear and tear can lead to arthritis, disc degeneration or narrowing of the spaces between the vertebrae, sometimes affecting the nerves.
Sleeping position – Poor pillow support, an old, inadequate mattress or sleeping in an awkward position can leave you waking up with a stiff or sore neck.
Sometimes, neck pain can be a combination of multiple factors. That’s why every assessment at The Woodford Physio is tailored to the individual. No two people’s pain is exactly the same.
When you come into my clinic, the first thing I’ll do is assess your individual situation. I want to hear your story—how the pain started, how it’s affecting your life, and what your goals are. From there, we’ll work together to create a treatment plan that makes sense for you.
Each session is tailored to your specific needs and circumstances. Your treatment for neck pain may include:
This includes joint mobilisations, soft tissue release, trigger point therapy and gentle stretches and manipulation in order to restore movement and relieve pain.
I’ll guide you through targeted exercises to improve strength, mobility, and control of the neck and upper back, giving you the conditioning and support you need to help alleviate your persistent pain.
Helping you become more aware of your posture and showing you practical ways to improve it throughout the day, such as sitting in a different position, or looking at your walking posture.
I’ll help you understand your pain and how to manage it, plus give advice on workstation setup, choice of chair, sleeping positions, and more.
My goal here at The Woodford Physio is always to empower you. I don’t work towards making you feel better temporarily, rather I work to understand your body and build long-term resilience against future flare-ups.
We are delighted to have helped many people stay pain-free and have many 5-star reviews on Google.
If you’ve been living with neck pain for more than a few days and it’s not improving, or if it’s getting worse, it’s a good idea to get it checked out. You should also seek help if you’re experiencing:
These can be signs that your neck pain involves nerve irritation, which may need more targeted treatment. As always, it’s a good idea to seek emergency treatment if your pain is extreme.
This is a question I get a lot, and the answer depends on a few things: how long you’ve had the pain, the underlying cause and how consistent you are with your exercises and self-care.
Some people see improvements within just a few sessions. For others, especially with long-standing or complex pain, it can take a bit longer. But I’ll be honest with you throughout the process, and together we’ll keep reassessing and adjusting the plan as needed.
You don’t have to put up with constant neck pain or rely on painkillers just to get through the day. Physiotherapy can help you get to the root of the problem, relieve your symptoms, and prevent future issues.
If you’re ready to take that first step, I’d love to help. Feel free to get in touch with the clinic, or use the quick and easy online booking system to book your first appointment. I’m waiting to give you back your mobility and alleviate that persistent neck pain.
