Rick Porter, The Woodford Physio

Hi, I'm Rick

“I’ve been a physiotherapist for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve worked with the England women’s rugby team, Manchester City women’s team, Blackburn Rovers and the McLaren Formula-1 team, and now I want to use those years of sports therapy experience to help you. I believe in a personalised, individualised approach to physiotherapy, whether you’re looking to manage painful symptoms, recover after an injury or simply get stronger and improve your performance.”

What Is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare discipline focused on diagnosing, treating and preventing physical impairments. Using a combined approach of manual therapy and targeted exercises, physiotherapists work to increase your range of movement, reduce your pain levels and improve overall function. Whether you’re dealing with a chronic condition such as sciatica or arthritis, you’re recovering from surgery, or you’re managing a painful injury after an accident, physiotherapy can help facilitate healing and improve wellness.

Common Conditions Treated with Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is highly effective for a wide range of conditions and situations. Some of the more common are:

  • Post-Surgical Recovery – Rehabilitation using physiotherapy after joint replacements, spinal surgeries or other procedures can help to restore strength and mobility, aiding in the recovery process.

  • Chronic Pain Conditions – Physiotherapy can help with the management of conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia and lower back pain, improving daily function and reducing discomfort.

  • Workplace Injuries – If you suffer from repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome or back injuries sustained in the workplace, physiotherapy can help reduce pain with targeted exercises.
  • Neurological Disorders – Individuals who have suffered a stroke, or those who deal with conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease can benefit from physiotherapy, as it can enhance mobility, coordination and balance.

  • Age-Related Conditions – Physiotherapists offer support for seniors dealing with conditions like osteoporosis, coordination issues or general age-related movement problems.

  • Accident Recovery – Physiotherapy can aid in the rehabilitation for common injuries sustained during an accident, such as whiplash, fractures or soft tissue injuries.

Physiotherapy is highly adaptable. Therapists will cater your plan to your specific needs, ensuring that your treatment is designed to address your unique challenges and goals.

Testimonials

We are delighted to have helped many people stay pain-free and have many 5-star reviews on Google.

I recently injured my elbow at work and it was causing quite considerable pain. It was impacting work that much that I felt I needed the help of a physio. Rick was recommended. He came to my house and ran through some light exercises to see what the problem is and help reduce the pain. Those exercises I have carried on with and the pain has dramatically reduced, giving me much more ability with my manual labour job. I can’t recommend Rick highly enough..
Rick has been a fantastic physio and I would highly recommend him for treatment. His professional manner, knowledge, and his extensive working experience allowed him to piece together, what was in my case, a complicated puzzle. Despite seeing multiple professionals, it was only Rick who was able to pull out pertinent bits of information in order to reach a conclusion and enable the correct management. Thank you!!
Richard at Woodford Physio is exceptional! From the first appointment, his friendly and professional approach put me at ease. He thoroughly assessed my condition, explained the treatment plan clearly, and answered all my questions with patience. The results have been incredible – I noticed significant improvement after just a few sessions, and his guidance on home exercises has been invaluable. Richard’s expertise, holistic approach, and genuine care make him the best physio I’ve ever seen. Highly recommended!
I've just started my physio sessions with rick I'm really enjoying them, I've really valued the time Rick has taken to understand my injury and provide me with a plan and approach. Ricks really helped me to understand the exercises I need to do and the mechanisms by how they improve my injury, fundamentally rick is friendly and approachable and I would definitely recommend him!
Rick is a top physio and has a brilliant set up. He makes you feel super comfortable and spends time asking questions to work out the best approach to take. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a physio in the Cheshire area.
Rick is very friendly and welcoming, he has an approach to trying to find the issue with various techniques/tests and considering the whole body to try to identify the root cause which is a marked change from other physio appointments I have had. Even after one initial session I’m confident that we’ll get to the bottom of my current issue and maybe spot other legacy issues too!
Rick has helped me come back from a torn ACL to playing squash. He's professional and friendly and I highly recommend him. He has a nice clean studio to work in, and provides a digital copy of your rehabilitation programme to make it easy to do your exercises at home. He has an excellent booking system on his website and has always been very accommodating if ever I've needed change an appointment. I honestly can't recommend him highly enough. We're lucky to have such a good physio in our area 🙂
I have had issues with calf and hamstring injuries over a period of time Quickly and easily booked initial consultation during which ,after a thorough examination ,a number of causes were identified .Rick set out a planned course of action . Very professional but in a relaxed way . Many thanks
I attended the Woodford Physio for the first time yesterday and was assessed and treated by Richard. As a health care professional myself I can say with absolute confidence that Richard did an extremely thorough assessment, explaining his findings and the treatment he was to give. He was kind, thoughtful and professional, and listened carefully to my description of symptoms. I am very impressed by the care I received and would recommend him without reservation.
I contacted Rick for a home visit after undergoing surgery for a full hip replacement. He did a full assessment of my medical conditions both from a pre and post op perspective and provided advice and exercises to support my recovery. I found him very knowledgeable about my conditions and easy to talk to. I would have no hesitation in recommending him.
During my initial consultation with Rick I found him to be very knowledgeable and he made me feel comfortable and relaxed. His initial assessment was comprehensive and thorough. He was systematic in his approach and considered my problem in the context of the ‘bigger picture’ of my life as a busy working parent. I would not hesitate to recommend him to friends and family.

What The Woodford Physio can do for you

Here at The Woodford Physio, I use a variety of techniques and treatments to address the root cause of your pain and bring you relief.

Exercise Therapy

Tailored exercise programs are a fundamental part of physiotherapy. These exercises are designed to strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility and improve your balance. They are most often prescribed for post-surgical rehabilitation, injury recovery and alleviating the symptoms from chronic conditions like osteoarthritis.

Manual Therapy

This approach involves hands-on techniques like joint mobilisation, manipulation and soft tissue massage. It is used to treat pain, improve range of motion and flexibility, and reduce muscle tension. Manual therapy is particularly effective for conditions like back pain, arthritis and sports injuries.

Posture and Ergonomics

Physiotherapists will provide guidance on maintaining proper posture and help with ergonomic adjustments to daily activities. This can prevent strain and reduce workplace repetitive injuries, especially for individuals with jobs that require them to stay seated for long periods, or perform repetitive motion tasks.

Balance and Gait Training

For individuals recovering from strokes, surgeries or neurological conditions, I use specific exercises to improve balance and walking ability, reducing the risk of falls and granting confidence when performing daily tasks.
